How Technology Is Changing The Way Your Hospital Functions
Wednesday, December 1st, 2010Hospitals are built around technology. The technology that keeps hospitals running and that allows so many tests and procedures to be completed is just as important as all the people who work in the hospital. And as technology continues to evolve so too does the way your hospital functions. Here is how technology is changing the way your hospital functions.
Accessibility Of Information
As much as you might like to think that the doctors at hospitals know everything about every medical condition that has ever existed, they don’t. Doctors often have to look up information regarding symptoms and various health conditions because all the possible health conditions in the world are just too much for any one person to know. Luckily, technology is making this information more accessible.
The internet has made information more accessible and the availability of the internet on mobile devices has made the information available no matter where a health professional may be. Instead of having to dash off to the nearest computer terminal or flip through massive medical texts now health professionals can use any device with an internet connection. Smartphones are getting special attention because of all the apps that they have available to provide health professionals with information on the spot. This instant access to what are essentially portable medical libraries can save lives.
Patient Medical Information Systems
Beyond the incalculable benefits of doctors and other health professionals having the medical knowledge at their fingertips, the general patient medical information systems are better. This will eventually tie in to the above information accessibility as these systems become accessible on portable devices but for now these systems are still wondrous. They keep track of all the medical records for patients.
This means that these systems can notify health professionals when a certain treatment is likely to trigger an allergy or when a test might do more harm than good. Some of these patient medical information systems are linked so that patients who go to different medical facilities do not have unnecessarily repeated tests and will not have any pertinent information that is know by one facility and not another. These electronic files can eliminate problems caused by illegible handwriting, pages of patient medical records being stuck together, and pages of patient medical records being missing entirely. These systems also streamline the billing process too, making it easier on everyone.
Automated Hospital Systems
Technology is also automating many medical tasks so that they are safer. There are now smartbeds that can monitor the vital signs of patients and that can notify hospital staff when patients change positions and might fall out of bed. There are bar codes that help hospital staff to pull up patient information to make sure that medications and other tests and treatments are the right ones being given to the right patient. Basically, more of the burden of care is being shifted to technology.
Technology changes the way hospitals run by making them better. It helps to make them safer, more efficient, and helps to keep health professionals knowing all they need to know to provide the best care possible.
